Close to 4.93 million people have been affected in Bangladesh after record levels of rainfall swept across the country, causing widespread flooding and landslides.

More than 280,000 people are taking refuge in 3,500 emergency shelters that have been opened to support those displaced by the floods – shelter has also been provided for more than 21,000 cattle.

The floods were triggered by heavy monsoon rains and have killed at least 12 people, according to local authorities.

The rainfall this monsoon season has been described as some of the heaviest in decades, with certain regions experiencing levels that break historical records, and nearly a million people have been left stranded in villages and towns.

The worst affected

The flash floods have disproportionately affected poorer households in Bangladesh. Many of the affected districts do not often experience events such as this, leaving many people with little-to-no preparedness or awareness of how to respond when disaster strikes.

Thousands of buildings and homes have been damaged, with fish and standing crops washed away as floodwaters recede.

As the floodwaters retreat, the extent of the devastation caused is slowly revealed. The damage will likely lead to further suffering for the poor. With their belongings washed away, many are now heavily reliant on humanitarian aid.

There is a critical need for the restoration of water, sanitation and hygiene facilities, health services, and vital infrastructure such as roads in particular, which have suffered heavy damage from floodwater.

Providing essential support

Islamic Relief is at the forefront of the emergency response efforts in Bangladesh.

In the cities of Feni and Cumilla, we have distributed essential food supplies to more than 5,000 of the worst affected families. We are also looking to provide multipurpose cash assistance and hygiene kits to further support communities affected by the floods.

Other affected districts where Islamic Relief is looking to distribute aid include Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Chittagong, Noakhali and Khagrachhari.
