Ramadan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. For many of those observing Ramadan, it is a time to become closer to God. It is a time of joy, and for spending time with family and giving to charity.

Ramadan holds deep meaning for millions of Muslims around the world. It is characterised by fasting from dawn till dusk, performing extra rituals, and breaking the fast with iftar meals in a shared celebration.

For those not familiar with Ramadan, there are a number of ways you can let those in your life who are observing the holy month know that they are in your thoughts during this special period.

Ramadan Mubarak

Taking the time to learn how to properly wish your Muslim friends, family, colleagues, and neighbours well during Ramadan is a polite and considerate way to show respect to them and their faith.

In the English-speaking world, Muslims generally do not wish each other a ‘Happy Ramadan,’ instead saying ‘Ramadan Mubarak’ or ‘Ramadan Kareem’. Both are Arabic terms that translate to ‘Blessed Ramadan’ and ‘Have a generous Ramadan’ respectively.

Around the world, there are variations on this. ‘Ramzan Mubarak’ is a common variation, mainly used in countries such as India and Pakistan.

Various Muslim-majority nations in Africa, Asia, and elsewhere use other greetings in their native languages.

For example, in Turkish, it’s ‘Ramazan ayiniz mübarak olsun’, in Somali it’s ‘Soon Wanaagsan’ and in Malay it’s ‘Selamat Berpuasa’.
