Lebanon is grappling with an enormous wave of displacement amid an serious escalation in conflict in the Middle East.
The humanitarian situation in the country is desperate, with more than 1 million people forced to flee their homes. Health facilities are under intense strain, grappling with power shortages, supply gaps and overworked staff. Ambulance routes are frequently blocked by debris, ongoing bombardment and damaged roads, causing delays in lifesaving assistance.
On April 8, Lebanon faced its deadliest day of bombing in many years, with hundreds of people killed and more than 1,000 wounded after over 100 Israeli airstrikes struck in less than one hour. A 10-day ceasefire, currently in place, has brought a fragile but welcome pause in hostilities. Islamic Relief hopes the ceasefire holds and urges international government with leverage and all parties involved to ensure that it is fully respected.
Even before the latest wave of mass displacement, nearly 874,000 people in Lebanon were classed as food insecure. Now, that number is set to rise as escalating hostilities and road closures obstruct the delivery of food, medical supplies and other essentials.
Lebanon has been beset by crises in recent years, including the 2020 Beirut port explosion and political and economic upheaval. In 2023, the country came under Israeli bombardment as the crisis in Gaza spread, prompting mass displacement and heaping strain on the country’s creaking infrastructure.
The current wave of displacement has seen more than 1.2 million people displaced. Over the last 7 weeks of attacks, more than 1,500 people have been killed and between 4,000 and 6,000 injured.
Israeli evacuation orders have forced hundreds of thousands of people to leave the south of Beirut and large swaths of southern Lebanon for the relative safety of the country’s north. Many families fled with nothing and are now sleeping in the open air.
Hundreds of schools and other public buildings have been converted into shelters that are now becoming desperately overcrowded.
The vast numbers of displaced people in Lebanon are in urgent need of:

Since tensions escalated in the region last October, Islamic Relief has helped almost 30,000 people affected by the crisis with food parcels, hygiene kits, blankets and mattresses, and has provided thousands of items of medical supplies for hospitals and primary healthcare clinics.
Islamic Relief Lebanon is currently supporting displaced families and local host communities in Nabatieh, Tyre, Bekaa and Balbek, where most of the recently displaced people have been seeking refuge.
Islamic Relief teams in Lebanon distributed more than 1,000 food parcels during the first days of Ramadan 2024 in North Lebanon for Lebanese, Palestinian, and Syrian refugees.
As we supply humanitarian aid, Islamic Relief is also calling for urgent de-escalation across the Middle East. Civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected, in accordance with international law. People must not be forced to leave their homes and must be assured safe access to humanitarian assistance.
