Urgent appeal to support survivors of Afghan earthquake

More than 600 people have been confirmed dead and over 2,500 injured after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan early on 1 September.

Most families were asleep when the quake struck around midnight local time in Kunar province. Children have described waking in terror as homes collapsed around them, and families fled in panic to try and find safety. Multiple aftershocks continued throughout the night.

The numbers of dead and injured are expected to rise as search and rescue efforts continue. Many of the worst-affected areas are remote and mountainous regions. Roads have been blocked by landslides and rescuers have to reach some of the worst-hit villages by foot or evacuate casualties by helicopter.

“Entire villages have been turned into mud and rubble in Kunar and the death toll is rising every hour. Thankfully Islamic Relief’s team in the affected region is safe and we have now deployed an emergency health team to get urgent aid to survivors,” Ibrahim Ahmed Alhomadi, Islamic Relief’s head of programmes in Afghanistan, says.

healthcare, food, water and shelter. The affected areas are remote, rural and mountainous, “People have lost everything and desperately need and landslides and floods make it even harder to reach them. These are poor villages and many of the homes are made from mud or flimsy materials that completely collapsed.”

The impact of the quake is particularly severe as the earthquake was very shallow, just 5 miles (8 kilometres) below the surface of the earth. The response is further hampered by severe flooding that swept through Kunar and neighbouring Nangarhar provinces in the 2 days before the earthquake.

What is happening in Afghanistan?

Tremors were felt across Nur Gal, Sawki, Watpur, Manogi and Chapa Dara districts in this mountainous province. Further 4.5 tremors happened in Basawul in the adjacent province of Nangarhar.

Fatalities and injuries are feared to be much higher as the affected districts are in remote and difficult to reach areas. However, helicopters are being utilised to bring injured people to Kunar city.

Islamic Relief are on the ground

Islamic Relief has deployed an emergency response team to provide critical services to survivors. The current response is focused in areas of Kunar province to provide essential health services including mother and child healthcare, treatment of injuries, nutrition support, and addressing trauma.

Our response over the coming days and weeks will include:

  • Delivering food where markets and no longer functioning
  • Distributing tents, blankets, hygiene kits and other essential items
  • Installing portable latrines
  • Delivering medicines and providing health assistance

The situation in Afghanistan:

  • 12 million people facing extreme hunger
  • 8 million people just one step away from famine
  • 3 million children under five are expected to suffer from malnutrition

Afghan civilians have already been facing the brunt of economic instability for over two years, and with basic services having collapsed support for those impacted by the earthquake will be impacted.

The international community must continue to advocate for and deliver humanitarian aid provision and support for basic human needs through non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the UN agencies.

Islamic Relief calls on all parties to ensure that the efficient provision of humanitarian aid is made possibleand unrestricted, prompt, secure, and unimpeded access for all humanitarian personnel, including women, is applied in accordance with international law. This applies to United Nations agencies, international and local non-governmental organisations, and other humanitarian actors

Islamic Relief’s work in Afghanistan

Islamic Relief, a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), has been working in Afghanistan for over 20 years. Recently, our teams on the ground have distributed 13,061 food packs to the most vulnerable families in Kabul, Nangarhar, Balkh, Bamiyan, and Kapisa provinces. Qurbani meat distributions to over 10,000 families have also been carried out.

We are also running eight mobile health teams, which provide the only source of healthcare for many Afghans who are living in the country’s most remote rural areas. This includes hygiene and water storage kits, to help prevent the spread of illness and disease.

As Afghans anticipate the harshness of the winter season and what it has to bring, including a threat to their very survival, we are on the ground, distributing heaters and fuel, blankets, clothes, and shelter materials to thousands of families.

The psychological impact of the crisis unfolding, and years of conflict, is taking its toll on Afghan communities. We are also providing people with home visits, to help support their mental health during this unfathomable time.

We continue to raise awareness and support women facing gender-based violence. Our teams in the UK have also supported Afghan refugee families by providing hot meals and delivering essential sanitary items.
