Islamic Relief is launching an appeal to support those affected by the earthquakes in Venezuela.
On the evening of 24 June 2026, a major “doublet” earthquake struck Venezuela. It is one of the strongest seismic events recorded in the country in over a century.
Key stats
Two powerful earthquakes occurred within 40 seconds. The second quake was one of the strongest tremors to hit Venezuela in a century, at a magnitude of 7.5.
Significant destruction has been reported in the capital Caracas and surrounding areas, where dozens of buildings have collapsed. Caracas International Airport has been closed due to damage.
Power, water, gas, and communications services have been disrupted across several areas. Many Venezuelans are spending the night on the street, with the interior ministry urging people to leave damaged homes over concerns of unstable buildings and gas lines possibly being affected.
The La Guaira region in the north of Venezuela has been declared a “disaster zone” due to the extent of the damage.
The government of Venezuela has declared a nationwide state of emergency. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with teams actively responding in affected locations.
